Communities across the Northland came together Saturday to help clean up for Earth Week.

In Cloquet, people gathered at Dunlap Island Park.

The event was organized by the Boldt Company, a local business in Cloquet.

Volunteers picked up trash for several hours, and they said they were able to pick up things like tires and cans from the park.

Organizers say they were able to pick up a couple of hundred pounds of trash by the end of the day.

"We wanted to get everyone out. It's a nice time to be outside after the pandemic to get everyone together and reunite and take care of the natural world, which is a limited resource, and making sure we're engaged with our community in a way that we appreciate. We're able to give back," said Jonathan Ballmer, clean-up organizer.

On the South Shore of Wisconsin, people in Ashland come out to make their city a little greener Saturday.

They gathered at the H. Pearson Plaza Park to clean up the city and surrounding areas.

Volunteers also planted a tree in celebration of Arbor Day.

Organizers say days like this are important to participate in to help teach younger generations about the Earth.

"We have to make them know that how they treat the Earth and their green spaces is really important. They need to take that on as stewards to the land," said Sara Hudson, Parks and Rec. Director of Ashland.

At both events, groups handed out t-shirts to volunteers.
