A virtual ceremony was held Monday morning to mark the St. Lawrence's Seaways 63rd navigation season.

Representatives of U.S. Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation joined with those of its binational partner, the Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation along with guests like U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to commemorate the occasion.

“Together the US and Canada are working to safely distribute goods where they need to go while creating jobs and protecting our environment,” said Buttigieg. “If we are to meet our climate goals, as we must, supporting binational partnerships like the seaway, will play a key role."

A ship transiting the seaway's 15 locks from Montreal to Lake Erie crosses the international border 27 times, and the Department of Transportation and Transport Canada work closely together to ensure that this transit experience is as safe and seamless as possible.
