One of the Northland's very own won the Junior Iditarod Sled Dog Race Sunday!

14-year-old Morgan Martens of Brule completed the 150 mile stretch in just 28 hours.

He did so running a team of Beargrease runner up Ryan Redington's dogs.

"My sister did it three years ago and when Ryan asked me, I had to say yes," Martens said.

Martens said his goal was simply to finish the race, but he ended up crossing the finish line in first place.

"It was very exciting," Martens said. "My family and friends were there waiting."

Martens' mom, Janet, said he remained at the front of the race for much of the 150 mile stretch, but didn't actually know that himself.

"He didn’t know where he was because you can’t really look back. You have to keep moving forward, so it was very exciting," Janet said.

Martens added that he was grateful for the support he received from family, friends and sponsors.

"I am very thankful," Martens said.
