Celebrate Minnesota’s majestic north shore and learn about its unique geology, climate and more. The Department of Natural Resources and the Sugarloaf North Shore Stewardship Association are holding an annual open house at the Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The open house includes a series of scheduled naturalist talks and there will be ongoing activities throughout the day including a scavenger hunt, scientific and natural area slideshow, children’s water table and educational displays, games and self-guided walks. Programs will be offered highlighting the 50th anniversary of the Minnesota’s scientific and natural areas, North Shore geology, and the conservation of the state’s rare arctic plants.

Scheduled programs:

7 a.m.  – Nature center opens, bird banding demonstration.
10 a.m. – Scientific and natural areas: 50 years of science and beauty.
11:30 a.m. – North Shore geology walk.
1 p.m. – Conservation of Minnesota’s rare arctic relict plants – John Valez, University of Minnesota Duluth.

Advance registration is not required and people are welcome to spend all or part of the day. Warm, sturdy shoes or boots are recommended for the outdoor walks.
