Minnesota Fire Deaths Second-Lowest On Record in 2018

The number of fire deaths in 2018 is the second-lowest on record in the state of Minnesota. The State Fire Marshal's Office says 37 people died last year in fires. That is the fewest fire fatalities since 2009 when 35 people were killed - and 46-percent lower than the 68 deaths in 2017.
Careless smoking was the leading cause of fires where a cause could determined, and there were no working smoking alarms in 30 percent of the homes with a fire death. Also, people age 50 or older accounted for nearly 60 percent of fire victims.
The final fire death numbers were released today by Department of Public Safety (Tuesday).
