The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division held an open house Thursday, July 12, at the Grand Marais City Hall council chambers to discuss and get feedback on the Grand Marais-to-Cutface segment of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail.

The council chamber was full with citizens wanting to learn more about the section, which will be just over three miles long. The new segment starts at Fall River Road in Grand Marais and goes south along Lake Superior to Cutface Creek, to the rest area on Highway 61.  Proposed amenities will include observation areas and interpretive signage.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2019, with completion anticipated by summer 2020.

WTIP’s Rhonda Silence was at the meeting to hear what people think about the proposed route – and about concerns from some about the placement of a bridge near the waterfall on Fall River.  To listen to the report, follow this link to the WTIP website.  http://wtip.org/dnr-hears-concern-about-gitchi-gami-bridge-proposal

The DNR is still seeking comments on the proposal. To learn more and/or to comment, visit the DNR website.
