Watch video of storm waves from April storm.
The mid-April "winter" storm that left over a foot of snow in many areas around the region also packed powerful winds that whipped up Lake Superior over the weekend. This strong low pressure system dragged in strong northeast winds that gusted over 50 mph, heaving tall waves against the Lake Superior North Shore.
The strong wind and cold temperatures prompted the City of Duluth to warn the public against using the popular Duluth Lakewalk due to icy conditions and rocks pushed ashore by the waves. This is the second storm this winter season to batter the shoreline in such a severe way, with an October 2017 storm causing a significant amount of damage to the Lakewalk and other places along the shoreline.
Highlighted in the video are waves overtaking the pier seawall in Canal Park, surfers at Stoney Point north of Duluth, and cliffs at Split Rock Lighthouse and Tettegouche State Park being blasted by massive waves.
