Veterans are going on a free fishing trip with local guides as a token of appreciation for their service.

This April, veterans in the Twin Ports area will be able to join fishing guides to catch steelhead on local streams and rivers. Meant as a donation to veterans to say "thank you" for their dedication to our country, any veteran can come along free of charge. FishingBooker, an online service for booking fishing trips, interviewed organizer Cory Wehrman of Brule.

The action is a collaboration between four Wisconsin and Minnesota fishing guides and several veteran organizations, mainly the Wounded Warrior Project and the Douglas County Veterans Service Office in Superior. Wehrman and fellow guides from Duluth, Ashland and Lake Geneva take veterans fishing to share his passion and expertise with them.

Two five-day events are planned for the Northland — one in Brule April 6-10, and on the North Shore from April 19 to April 23. The exact location of all the trips will be determined shortly beforehand by Wehrman, as this depends on where the fish are biting, but both will take place within a comfortable driving distance from Duluth and Superior.

"We're donating our time, knowledge, and equipment to the veterans just to help them with getting out on the river and gaining knowledge in the hopes they can retain some of the knowledge and feel confident enough to go out and share that experience with their loved ones," Wehrman said. "They can tap into that resource — it will stay close to them, and they can use it as therapy or whatever they need it for. That's the least we can do to try and say thank you."

Wehrman has been fishing since the age of 12 and started guiding professionally four years ago. He grew up in Silver Bay, Minnesota, and lives in Brule, but he guides all over Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Veterans interested in joining one of the fishing trips can reach Wehrman at (218) 220-9790.
