Weekly Conservation Officer Reports

Feb 27, 2018 08:30AM ● By Editor
District 6 - Two Harbors area

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) worked a concentrated enforcement detail on Lake of the Woods with other officers. They checked many anglers and encountered a wide variety of violations.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) attended an ice rescue and survival course with the U.S. Coast Guard. Time was also spent checking anglers on remote trout lakes. Enforcement action was taken for angling and snowmobile violations.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) reports great snowmobile conditions after several large snowfalls. Area clubs are doing a good job grooming and snowmobile riding activity is high. Overall, reports indicate a slow fish bite in the area. Bermel assisted with the classroom portion of the Ely youth snowmobile safety class. Thanks to the volunteers who helped. Violations for the week included possession of marijuana, numerous snowmobile registration display violations, loud exhaust, careless operation, failure to transfer ATV ownership, and failure to display a shelter tag.

CO Sean Williams (Ely 1) reports the Wolftrack Classic Dogsled Race took place on several of the Ely-area snowmobile trails, which had received more than a foot of snow in past weeks. Several large groups of snowmobile riders were also contacted. They reported mostly excellent trail conditions. Violations included failure to display snowmobile registration and angling with no license in possession.

CO Marty Stage (Ely) traveled into the BWCAW by dogsled, skis, and snowshoes. Multiple storms left a foot or two of new snow. When added on top of the existing snow, the new snow has made off-trail travel very difficult. The thick ice is probably why there isn't more slush on the lakes. Remember to get a new fishing license after this week if you plan to fish for trout or panfish.
