Schouweiler wins fourth straight Beargrease mid-distance title

Musher Martha Schouweiler has won her fourth consecutive John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon mid-distance title.

Schouweiler, of Irma, Wis., and her team crossed the finish line of the 120-mile mid-distance race at Trail Center on the Gunflint Trail at 6:34 a.m. Monday, followed by Frank Moe of Hovland at 6:46 a.m. Mike Bestgen of St. Cloud took third place, finishing at 6:59 a.m.

Schouweiler’s fourth title extends her record as the winningest Beargrease mid-distance musher.

Jasper Johnston of Ely won the junior race, reaching Trail Center at 8:01 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures dropped into the teens below zero early Monday as mushers completed the final leg from Caribou to Trail Center.

Beargrease marathon mushers remain on the trail, and are expected to finish Wednesday at Billy’s Bar near Duluth.
