Redington and Oberg win Gunflint sled dog races

Musher Ryan Redington became a repeat winner of the 2018 Gunflint Mail Run’s 12-dog sled dog race, held over two days in Cook County. 

Redington, who splits his time between Alaska and Ashland, won the 12-dog, 100-mile race with a time of 9 hours, 6 minutes, 35 seconds. Nathan Schroeder of Warba claimed second place in 9:16:45. Matt Schmidt of Grand Marais was third with 9:24:26.

In the eight-dog, 70-mile race, Joanna Oberg of Ignace, Ontario, won with a time of 5:14:27. Martha Schouweiler of Irma, Wis., took second place with a time of 5:22:23 and Frank Moe of Hovland finished third with 5:28:34.

The races started and ended at Trail Center Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. The two-day event included two legs of equal distance, separated by a mandatory layover.
