County Welcomes Cell Service to Hovland Tower

Media Release from Cook County - December 21, 2017
– Cook County is pleased to announce T-Mobile 4G service is now available in the Hovland area, hosted on a county-owned and managed tower.

“In addition to improving communication options for County residents and visitors, improved cell service provides better coverage for our public safety workers and improves County employees’ ability to work remotely (on-site) which cuts costs through efficiencies,” said Rowan Watkins, Radio Communication Analyst - Cook County MIS Department and Tower Project Manager.

Coverage is expected in the Camp 20 and North Road areas, as well as in Chicago Bay and along HWY 61 on both sides of the bay. Further testing and coverage maps are expected from the carrier soon.

Three more East-end cellular service projects are underway, with anticipated go-live dates in 2018:
  • T-Mobile in Grand Portage
  • Verizon in both Hovland and Grand Portage;
Cook County is continually working to manage our tower infrastructure to maximize public safety and citizen services while minimizing the impact on our natural environment. Cook County owns and manages 11 towers across the County.
