DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Winds gusting to over 35 miles per hour are causing high waves and flooding in some coastal areas of Lake Superior on Friday.

The City of Duluth is advising the public that the Lakewalk in Canal Park and east to the 21st Avenue access is not passable because of the debris that the high waves have washed up. City crews are assessing the situation and hope to conduct clean up and repairs where needed as soon as possible. Canal Park reported a wind gust of over 60 miles per hour early Friday morning.

The waves have also flooded parts of Canal Park. The Marine Iron Parking lot is closed and some segments of Canal Park Drive and Harbor Drive have standing water. Barricades have been placed where access is not possible and the public is being advised to stay our of the flooded areas.

High waves and flooding have also closed Highway 2 in Ashland between Wisconsin Highway 13 and Sanborn Avenue. Both east bound and west bound traffic is being detoured around the area until the water recedes.
