Former Cook County Health and Human Services Director Josh Beck has four pending charges against him brought forth by the state of Minnesota, including a felony assault charge that references a past pattern of child abuse.

Two felony charges were filed on Aug. 1 against Beck, including the charge of domestic assault by strangulation. The other felony is listed as a third-degree assault, specifically citing a past pattern of child abuse.

The other two crimes filed on Aug. 1 against Beck are both gross misdemeanors, each detailing the charge as child endangerment or situations that could cause harm or death to a child.

Allegedly, and according to court documents, at least some of the charges against Beck are the result of action he took against his own family.

Beck’s first scheduled courtroom appearance is Sept. 11 in the Cook County Courthouse.

Beck resigned as the director of the Cook County Health and Human Services Department on July 21.

As of Aug. 30, Beck’s whereabouts with regard to Cook County or Minnesota were unknown, according to several sources WTIP interviewed for this story.

A statement regarding the criminal charges against Beck was sent to WTIP on Aug. 30 from Cook County Administrator Jeff Cadwell. It reads:

1. Cook County has learned that criminal charges have been filed in Sixth Judicial District Court against former Cook County Public Health & Human Services Director Joshua Beck.

2. Cook County cannot comment on the court case or investigation. This is a personal matter involving a former employee.

3. Cook County takes its role in the delivery of human services extremely seriously.

With regard to Beck’s pending criminal charges, Assistant Lake County Attorney Lara Nygaard is listed representing the state of Minnesota.

Beck’s courtroom appearance on Sept. 11 is scheduled to begin at approximately 10 a.m.
