GRAND MARAIS, Minn.- Wooden rings, handmade cutting boards and naturally dyed silk shirts lined the inside of one booth at the Art festival in Grand Marais.

Dawnette Davis and Andrew Kringen the artists that manned the booth, have been attending the festival for half a decade

“I do wood cutting boards, jewelry, and my work is laminated wood. I use birds eye maple, walnut, birch, several different kinds of native woods and a few exotic woods,” said Kringen.

Davis says the beauty of Grand Marais and the city’s appreciation of art is what brings her back each year.

“The customers are wonderful so we’re happy to be back here whenever we can,” said Davis.

Around 70 artists from all over the state traveled to Grand Marais to take part in the art festival this year.

“We have many who have come for ten or more years, they love the fact that they focus on their artwork verses other forms of entertainment,” said Ruth Pszaro, the Program Director for Grand Marais Art Colony.

The arts festival has been going on for 27 years, and is put on by the Grand Marais Art Colony.

Organizers believe the festival is a good way to showcase the work of Minnesota artists, and support the vibrant local art scene that makes Grand Marais the charming town that it is

“In general being on the North Shore and the landscape and the horizon line, the ability to unplug, all those things are part of the observation that is part of the creative process,” said Pszwaro.
