Free Help For Tax Returns

Feb 04, 2017 10:26AM, Published by Editor, Categories: Community

The IRS-sponsored VITA/TCE Tax Aide Volunteers will again this year help members of the community with their 2016 Federal and State Individual Income Tax returns and their Minnesota Property Tax and Rent Refund forms and can E-file for them in almost all cases.

All persons with moderate to low incomes and all Seniors 60+ are eligible for free assistance under this program.

We can also help with taxpayer's previous year returns by amending, with corrections, their previous returns if a mistake was made or an omission occurred.

When a tax return is E-filed, people usually receive their refunds in

one to two weeks for MN refunds and two to four weeks for Federal refunds.

Tax Preparation begins Tuesday the 31st of January.  Tax Volunteers will be at Community Center in Grand Marais, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Community Center in Grand Portage, on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte, on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Please bring all your 2016 tax documents with you as well as your Social Security card and photo ID. In an increased effort to prevent identity theft, both IRS and the Minnesota Dept. of Revenue are asking us to check IDs closely this year.

Also, your paper copy of last year's Federal and Minnesota tax returns would be very helpful to have for reference.

We take people on a first come first served basis.  However, if you need to drop off your tax documents and return to work we can usually sit down with you and in 10 to 15 minutes collect the information we need to process your return for you to pick up later.

Questions - please call Chuck Flickinger 475-2776 or Steve Deschene at 387-1767.
